Beneath every Barcelona district exists a continuous sonic world: vibrations from soil, water, infrastructure, and geological movement that no one ever hears.

SUBSTRAT captures this hidden layer using geophones and brings it into a public, participatory design experience.

    The project

    Frequency and data become texture. The underground becomes visible

    The project deliberately repurposes technical instruments from the scientific domain into an artistic context, embodying the Barcelona Design Week theme of prototyping and testing.

    A dedicated low-frequency recording device has been deployed across Barcelona Poblenou district to capture underground vibration data.

    These data feeds a physical interface, where visitors can interact directly, adding particles to the surface and observing how their contribution alters the visual output while listening to the sounds that generated it.

    Printed visualizations of the underground recordings and their corresponding sound waves are displayed throughout the space as scenography, mapping each district's data onto the gallery itself.

    These prints situates the live interaction within a wider archive of the city's hidden sound, turning the Parking Gallery into a kind of cross-section of Barcelona's underground.
